Some people say that Culture effects Music. Others say Music effects Culture. So which is it? I personally believe that Music effects the Culture. And two decades that help prove this is the 50’s and the 60’s.
In the 50’s everyone was the same way, listened to the same thing, and was safe. And then all of a sudden Elvis comes on to the scene. Now Elvis is probably one of the biggest influences in the whole entire music industry and culture. Think about it, still to this day people want to be Elvis. Imagine what it was like in the 50’s. He changed the culture, He made them want to just push the lines a little. The 50’s the people were well groomed, they dressed nicely, and they were advancing in technology. They had the Credit Card, Pills, Video Recorders, and Video Tapes. If you were to take $100.00 from now and go back to the 50’s it would be like you had $835.81. That’s a big difference.
The 60’s was more sexually active. By far, they had a lot of forms of birth control, making teenagers even more curious. Also in the 60’s there were two groups – The Mods and The Rockers. Both groups were influenced by what you listened to, where you worked, and what you wore. The Mods had the use of durgs, mostly contained middle and upper class dropouts. They had their own vocabulary. And a certain “Bohemian” attitude. They listened to more Jazz and Blues music. The Rockers were more to alcohol then drugs. They used Motor Bikes and wore Leather. They were Grundgie looking, and they were “Die Hard Rock ‘N’ Rollers”. And they did not care what the authority had to say. Also one band in the 60’s was The Beatles, they also have still had a major impact on the music industry – which is an impact on the culture. The Beatles to this day are still a legend and will continue to be.
The 50’s and 60’s are significantly different although they are only a decade apart. Music is the one that has effect on Culture. People like to do, like to act, not how they want to, but how the music industry portrays how you are supposed to act.
